Vladimir Gorbik
Vladimir Gorbik is a GRAMMY-nominated symphony and choral conductor; recipient of the American publication MusicWeb International’s “Best Recording of the Year” Award for 2018; head choir conductor at the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra; founder, artistic director, and head conductor of Moscow’s Capital Symphony Orchestra and its New York City subsidiary; cofounder of the U.S.-based Patriarch Tikhon Russian-American Music Institute (PaTRAM); senior professor of the Department of Symphonic & Choral Conducting at the Moscow State P.I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory; and member of the International Union of Musicians.
He studied and graduated from the Department of Symphonic & Choral Conducting at the Moscow Conservatory under Professor Boris Tevlin (2008) as a choir conductor, and under Professor Igor Dronov (2000) as an orchestra conductor. From 1993 to 2000, he studied in the Department of Composing under Professor Roman Ledenev.
Since 1993, he has been performing his own spiritual and secular music and conducting choirs, chamber orchestras and full orchestras in the concert halls of the Moscow Conservatory.
Vladimir Gorbik’s work as a choir conductor has been connected for over 20 year to the Male Choir of the Moscow Metochion of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra, becoming its head conductor in 1998. Under Gorbik’s direction, the choir has joined Patriarch Kyrill of Moscow & All Russia at Divine Liturgies in the cathedrals of the Moscow Kremlin. In 2004 and 2008, Vladimir Gorbik directed the Male Choir of the Moscow Metochion of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra in the Kremlin at molebens and as part of the inauguration programs of Presidents of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and Dmitri Medvedev.
In 2013, Vladimir Gorbik became cofounder and board member of the Patriarch Tikhon Russian-American Music Institute (PaTRAM) in the United States, as well as the artistic director and conductor for PaTRAM’s male and mixed choirs.
Vladimir Gorbik was nominated in the 61st Annual GRAMMY Awards in the field of “Best Choral Performance” for a CD featuring the liturgical music of Pavel Chsenokov’s “Teach me Thy statutes,” recorded by the American company Sound Mirror in the Saratov Theological Seminary, and published by Reference Recordings in the U.S. This CD was named Recording of the Year by U.S.-based MusicWeb International Magazine.
During his tenure as symphony orchestra conductor, Gorbik worked with the singers and orchestras of the operatic studio at the Moscow Conservatory and the orchestra of the Defense Ministry of the Russian Federation.
He collaborates as a guest conductor with the Chamber Orchestra of the M.I. Glinka Smolensk Philharmonic, the “Soloists of Uzbekistan” Chamber Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan, and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra at the Pavel Slobodkin Center.
In March 2017, Vladimir Gorbik founded and led the Capital Symphony Orchestra (CSO), and its New York subsidiary in February 2018. The CSO’s first performances were held on the stages of the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, the Arkhipovsky Music Salon of the International Music Professionals Union, and Adelphi University’s Performing Arts Center (USA), and immediately drew the attention of both the Russian and Western press.
On October 30th, 2019 in Manhattan, in St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Gorbik gave a concert which is to be the first in a series of CSO concerts in the United States of America under the header “Breaking Boundaries,” as well as concerts in Moscow.
Vladimir Gorbik’s repertoire includes music from various eras and styles, from Baroque to compositions by contemporary composers.
Since 2012, Gorbik has been teaching in the Department of Symphonic & Choral Conducting at the Moscow State P.I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory, and holds master classes in Russia, the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Central Asia.
Vladimir Gorbik’s discography encompasses over twenty albums of spiritual music, as well as several films, including “Heavenly Crown,” “Bright Monday,” and “The Synodals.”
Vladimir Gorbik was awarded a Patriarchal Certificate [“Gramota”] by Patriarch Alexey II of Moscow & All Russia; the Venerable Sergius of Radonezh Medal, 2nd Class; and the Holy Right-Believing Prince Daniel of Moscow Medal.
In 2020, Gorbik has officially become the chief conductor of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra.
